Quick Check - How Does Motivation Work For You?
You may find that, like me, the way in which you are motivated changes with the situation i.e. it is contextual. Do you recognise times when you are motivated by what you want or need - a desire? For example, I want to run that race to raise money for charity.
At other times you may find your motivation to take action comes from a problem you are experiencing that you want to change or avoid. For example, I’ve gained 3 kilos - I really must lose weight. In this latter instance it can be helpful to focus on what you want instead of the problem. To quote Oprah Winfrey: ‘I know for sure that what we dwell on is what we become’.
So, I want to feel good about myself or I want to be energetic might be the real reasons you want to lose the weight.
Learning to recognise the structure of how you are motivated gives you more choice about how you use that motivation to achieve the best result.
